Artist-in-Residence Program

The Artist-in-Residence Program is being offered by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) as a way to incorporate visual arts into the interpretation and education activities conducted by the DNR.This program is for visual artists who paint or draw scenes from nature including plants, animals, and natural settings.

The selected artist is provided an apartment to live in for a two-week period in 2009. The artist is responsible for transportation to the site. A vehicle will be furnished for transportation around the Island and transportation would be provided to other nearby DNR facilities, if needed. The artist will be required to donate a piece of work to DNR that was prepared during their residency at Sapelo Island. The DNR will retain rights to use the donated piece of work in an appropriate manner. In addition, the artist will be required to participate an equivalent of a minimum one-hour per day in interpretive programs, seminars, demonstration, or other forms of public display. These will be scheduled by the DNR.

    Sapelo Island
Sapelo Island is a pristine 16,006 acres of barrier island off the east coast of Georgia. Accessible only by boat, Sapelo is still almost entirely undisturbed. The large natural area hosts abundant plants and wildlife including large maritime forests, coastal marshlands, several miles of pristine beaches, nesting turtles and one of the largest migratory bird populations on the coast including the painted bunting. A recently restored lighthouse provides the perfect backdrop to the natural and historic features of the Island. Sapelo Island provides an excellent setting to capture the natural features of Coastal Georgia. This and controlled public access create a perfect setting to inspire an artist’s creativity.

    Accommodations
The Artist-in-Residence will reside in an apartment on the Island. The apartment includes a kitchen with modern cooking facilities and heat/AC. The artist will need to furnish his or her own meals and bring all necessary items (food, linens, etc) with you to the Island.

    Selection Process
A selection committee consisting of DNR officials will select the Artist-in-Residence. The selection will be based on the artists’ previous work and ability to capture the essence of the nature in their work.
