Black Rock Mountain Parkway is a steep and winding mountain road. It is paved and well marked, but bus drivers should use extreme caution.

A two-hour program includes a 16-minute video on plantation life and the Civil War raid, living history demonstrations which may include blacksmithing, spinning and weaving and a self-guided 1/2 mile tour of the grounds which includes a garden, barnyard with farm animals (sheep and a mule), smokehouse, 1895 house, 1847 plantation plain style house, a privy, cotton gin, gristmill and sawmill, steam engine shed, syrup evaporator house, farm implement shed, blacksmith and carpentry shops.

There is no fee for ranger-led hikes on the nature trail or nature programs. Boat tours: $6/student; student rate applies to chaperones and teachers. There is a refuge entrance fee of $5/personal vehicle; $25/vehicle holding up to 24 passengers, $50/vehicle holding 25 or more passengers. If schools contact the State Park or National Wildlife Refuge at least two weeks in advance; they can request an entrance fee waiver form; the waiver form must be submitted and approved prior to arrival.
