Experience a special lecture from Michael K. Shaffer, Assistant Director of Kennesaw State University’s Civil War Center. Hear the story of Big Shanty serving as the home of Camp McDonald, the largest Civil War training camp in Georgia. This camp witnessed more than 13,000 soldiers practicing the art of war between 1861 and 1863.

Located Take I-20 exit #44. Turn onto Thornton Rd. (Hwy 278) West. Follow Hwy 278 West for 10 miles. Make a right onto Hwy 92. Travel North on Hwy 92 for approximately 6 miles. Look for brown Pickett's Mill signs as you continue. Turn left onto Due West Rd. Continue 2 miles. Turn right onto Mt. Tabor Church Rd. The site is 1/2 mile on the right.
