|CANCELED -- Sapelo Island Birding Adventure
Tuesday, Oct 7, 2014 until Thursday, Oct 9, 2014 3 PM to 5 PM
CANCELED. This adventure features birding with expert ornithologists around a barrier island. Habitats include open fields, maritime forests, marshes and beaches. On October 9, an optional kayak trip is available to participants interested in spending more time on Sapelo Island.
Sapelo Island is an incredible place to be during fall migration. The isolated beaches are excellent for viewing a variety of shorebirds, gulls and terns with the possibility of seeing red knots and long-billed curlews. Migrating raptors – particularly peregrine falcons and merlins – may also be seen on the beach. Sapelo is the only place in the United States outside of Texas to see the plain chachalaca which was introduced to the island in the 1920s. You will also see fall migrants, wood storks, bald eagles, white pelicans, and possibly roseate spoonbills. Painted buntings may be found in scrubs areas on the island. On October 9, an optional kayak trip is available to participants interested in spending more time on the island. (See pdf on the right.)
