Sapelo is a Birder’s Paradise
Sapelo Island is an incredible place to be during the height of spring migration. The isolated beaches are excellent for viewing a variety of shorebirds, gulls and terns with the possibility of seeing red knots and long-billed curlews. Sapelo is the only place in the United States outside of Texas to see the plain chachalaca which was introduced to the island in the 1920s. You will also see spring migrants, nesting wood storks, a bald eagle nest, white pelicans, and possibly roseate spoonbills. Painted buntings are fairly common and can be found in scrubs areas all over the island.
Reservations: Registration is limited to 24 participants with an option to stay a second night and explore the island by kayak with expert guides or strike out on your own. Participants must be at least 18 years of age.
Register by April 1 to secure your place on this exclusive birding trip. For reservations call 912-485-2299. Questions for the naturalist contact: Cate.Williams@gadnr.org
