Eco-Lodge opens in Fargo

February 25, 2011, Fargo, Ga. – The newly opened Suwannee River Eco-Lodge in Clinch County is a welcome addition to those planning meetings, weddings, reunions and retreats in southeast Georgia. Located near the famed Okefenokee Swamp, it is an affordable and unique destination for groups as well as individuals. The lodge is operated by Stephen C. Foster State Park, the western gateway to the nation’s largest blackwater swamp.

Lodge guests enjoy complete privacy in a wooded setting, just one mile from the winding river and 18 miles from the swamp. The Eco-Lodge is made up of eight rental cottages, a conference room, smaller meeting room, barbecue shelter and commercial kitchen. Guests may rent a portion or all of the facility.

The retreat’s cottages vary in size and capacity, and all have screened porches with wooded views. All units include fully equipped kitchens with refrigerator, oven and stove. Although Wi-Fi is available, units do not have televisions or telephones, adding to the retreat-like atmosphere. Visitors may rent cottages without also renting other Eco-Lodge facilities, making it an affordable getaway for kayakers and anglers exploring the Suwannee River and Okefenokee Swamp. Rates range from $45 to $125.

A window-lined conference room has seating for 100 and may be configured to host a variety of groups, from reunions to birthday parties, and from corporate retreats to weddings. Ten round tables may be stored to allow room for dancing or DJs. The smaller meeting room is designed much like the conference room but has seating for 35. Rates range from $90 to $175. Park staff can provide a list of approved caterers for groups that would also like to rent the commercial kitchen.

The Suwannee River Eco-Lodge is surrounded by exceptional outdoor recreation. The 9-hole Fargo Golf Course is just across the road. An on-site catfish pond is popular with anglers, and local outfitters can provide kayak/canoe rental. The gently flowing Suwannee River, with its tea-colored water and enormous tree trunks, is just a short drive away and may be accessed at the Suwannee River Visitor Center’s boat ramp. Entry to the Okefenokee Swamp – known for alligators, fishing and birding ~~ is 18 miles away at Stephen C. Foster State Park. Guided pontoon boat tours and boat rentals are available at the park when water levels are high enough.

The Eco-Lodge is the latest project of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to embrace energy efficiency. The facility is Silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified, using energy-efficient heating and air conditioning systems and low-flow plumbing. Half of the building materials originated within 500 miles of the site.
