Water Conservation Strategy
The water use for this building includes drastic reductions in water usage compared to a conventional building and incorporates rainwater harvesting on a large section of the building’s roof, resulting in a potable water use reduction of 77% compared to a baseline building. 38% of the building’s total roof area, equaling 3,994 square feet, is used for rainwater collection. Rain that is collected on the roof is routed through one of two roof rain washers before entering a 10,000-gallon underground cistern. Water from the cistern is filtered and chlorinated before servicing lavatories in the restrooms and classroom, as well as the janitor's mop sink. Water for the composting bins spray (if needed), and the exterior wall hydrants is filtered, with no chlorination. Using the LEED Letter Template for WE Credit 3, it is estimated that 44% of the building’s water needs will be met with harvested rainwater. This figure is conservative, considering that exterior wall hydrants served by rainwater are not included in the Credit 3 potable water usage calculations.
