Celebrating Volunteers!

The impact of our volunteers at Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites is unprecedented. They are an integral part of our mission of preserving our state’s natural and cultural heritage. As you go to a park this week and this month, thank the volunteers that you see for their commitment and their leadership to us. We honor them for their tireless dedication to our parks and state.

A Special Thanks to Some of Georgia's Volunteers!


	Chuck Bennett was cited for his work by the team at HAMBURG STATE OUTDOOR RECREATION AREA. Former site manager Daniel Hill stated that Chuck was one of the best volunteers that he ever worked with and was instrumental in helping build the volunteer program there. Chuck and his wife have been campground hosts for years with our parks and enjoy the time that they spend with us each year!!

	JARRELL PLANTATION STATE HISTORIC SITE has the reputation of having an outstanding volunteer involvement program. Site Manager Marty Fleming says that Jarrell is a place that has families that have been coming for years. The Moyer family are musicians who take part in music nights and special events that require period dress and wood stove cooking. Frank and Pam Hendricks have also volunteered with the wood stove cooking, making period toys, and the site’s medicine show. Paul and Dot Garrison plant and tend to the site’s demonstration garden all year round. The garden adds another aspect to the interpretation of the site. And with volunteer Clark Powell, a journeyman knife maker and blacksmith, the site has a well-rounded interpretive group!

	ROOSEVELT'S LITTLE WHITE HOUSE STATE HISTORIC SITE has some youth volunteers that they are extremely proud to have as a part of their team. Jake Galyon and Kelvin Harris started there with the Junior Ranger Camp last summer and both called their moms immediately to see if they could volunteer when the camp was over. Both help out on weekends and for events when they can. Between Jake raising chickens and Kelvin’s incredible voice that he has to utilize in his church choir, the site is happy to have their time.

	PANOLA MOUNTAIN STATE PARK boast a roster of diverse talents on their volunteer team. At 82 years young, C.H. Brown helped develop the fly fishing program and is serving a Chief Instructor. He has introduced over 300 people to the fly casting and willing to teach anyone. Elaine Nash, President of Friends Of Panola State Park, uses her skills as the head of the State Native Plant Society by leading hikes, doing native grass restoration and endangered plant location. Ahzjah Simmons has been featured nationally for the work she did with the summer camps at Panola.

	Site manager Holly Holdsworth has termed her volunteer force the ‘A Team’ at SKIDAWAY ISLAND STATE PARK. With Bill and Raye Hollingsworth, you get a get combo- Raye is a Savannah native that brings an incredible amount of knowledge to the park and Bill has been nicknamed ‘Superman’ because he can trouble shoot, help campers with registration tags and clean a campground all at once it seems. Kathy and Leroy Harris bring some serious energy to Skidaway. Kathy sells more annual passes than daily passes when she is working in the park office, and Leroy can fix anything- nothing goes broken when he is around and Holly says the park would be lesser maintained if it weren’t for him.
