History

Historic GopherGeorgia has played a role in many of the significant events that unfolded to form our nation as we know it today. As a result, the state has many historic treasures—filled with fascinating stories—open to the public as historic sites and parks.
There are 18 worthwhile, historic destinations. Visitors can experience many unique periods of history in authentic environments. From the burial grounds of early, Native American Indians to the fort that played a role in the war between Britain and Spain, a Civil War battlefield to the favorite vacation home of America’s beloved president F. D. Roosevelt, a preserved plantation to a museum that commemorates the first gold rush in America.
And history doesn’t just live on plaques and markers in these locations, it literally comes alive during different seasons when volunteers and interpretive staff reenact the period and events that took place there in true-to-life detail. It’s so fun and entertaining, it’s easy to forget it’s educational as well. So don’t just travel across the state for your next vacation, travel back in time at Georgia State Historic Sites and Parks.
