Historic New Manchester History Hike

Sweetwater Creek State Park - Lithia Springs, GA
This mile-long hike (easy to moderate) will lead to the five story ruins of the Civil War-era New Manchester textile mill and focus on the history of the Sweetwater Creek Valley. Walk on the Unicoi Turnpike for National Trails Day

Hardman Farm Historic Site - Sautee Nacoochee, GA
This walking tour of Hardman Farm features the Unicoi Turnpike, one of 16 historic trails in the U.S. designated as a "Millenium Trail." The Unicoi Turnpike, completed in 1819, was built over what may be the oldest road in Georgia. The "Unicoi Road" was a trade route used by native Americans at least since 1682, but likely much earlier. $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 62 and over, $7 for youth 6-17 and $3 for children under age 6, plus tax. 706-878-1077.

This walking tour of Hardman Farm features the Unicoi Turnpike, one of 16 historic trails in the U.S. designated as a "Millenium Trail." The Unicoi Turnpike, completed in 1819, was built over what may be the oldest road in Georgia. This moderate two-mile night hike will take us to a remote area where we will search the night sky for wonders like planets, constellations and shooting stars (weather permitting).
