80th Commemorative Ceremony for President Franklin D. Roosevelt

WARM SPRINGS, GA

April 12 marks the 80th anniversary of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s death in Warm Springs, Georgia. A public ceremony will honor the memory of one of our nation’s most influential presidents. Guest speakers include Senator Raphael Warnock and FDR’s great-grandson Haven Roosevelt Luke. Held each year on the Little White House Historic Site lawn, the ceremony includes a military band and color guard. Throughout the day, guests can tour the shaded grounds, museum and president’s modest vacation home, left much as it was in 1945.

FDR first came to Warm Springs, Georgia seeking therapy for polio. While posing for a portrait on April 12, 1945, he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and died a short while later. Today, the “Unfinished Portrait” is featured in a museum that showcases many exhibits, including FDR’s 1938 Ford convertible with hand controls, Fireside Chats playing over a 1930s radio, his stagecoach and a theater. Nearby is F.D. Roosevelt State Park and Dowdell’s Knob, a scenic overlook featuring a life-size sculpture of the nation’s 32nd president. Cottages and campsites are available at the park.
