Georgia State Parks Implements New Safety Measures at Tallulah Gorge

To enhance visitor safety, Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites will implement new heat-related restrictions at Tallulah Gorge State Park. When the heat index reaches the “Extreme Caution” category, as defined by the National Weather Service, stair access into the gorge will be restricted. The heat index reflects how hot it feels by combining air temperature and relative humidity—there is no single temperature that triggers the restriction, as it depends on both factors.

Visitors are encouraged to plan hikes during cooler seasons and take necessary precautions when exploring the park. To support these enhanced safety measures, the park will introduce a mandatory safety orientation video for gorge floor permit holders and install stair-access barriers on the north and south rims, as well as along the Sliding Rock Trail.

Tallulah Gorge State Park provides visitors with access to the gorge through a challenging trail system, which features a 1,099-step staircase and requires a daily permitting process for access to the gorge floor. Over the past two years, the park has experienced a significant increase in SAR incidents, largely due to heat, fatigue, dehydration, and physical limitations. In some cases, even rescuers have required medical attention.

Visitor, staff, and first responder safety is our top priority, and these updates reflect our ongoing commitment to taking proactive steps to protect both our visitors and first responders. We encourage all visitors to plan ahead, stay informed of weather conditions, and make responsible decisions before exploring the park.
