Pioneer Skills: Plant Tinctures

Join us in exploring the ancient art of making tinctures with herbs and other beneficial plants. We will cover the steps involved in creating tinctures, discuss various methods used in their preparation, and delve into the history of tinctures. If you are curious about this fascinating practice, call us today to register! This activity will take place at the Event Room in the Visitor Center. Please call to pre-register and arrive 5-10 minutes before the scheduled start time. If the weather becomes dangerous or unfavourable, the event may be cancelled.

Travel back in time with one of our park rangers and see what life was really like for 19th-century pioneers! Peek inside a historic cabin, discover how and why it was built the way it was, and hear fun stories about the tough (and sometimes surprising!) challenges pioneer families faced on the frontier. Watch the sunset reflect over Clarks Hill Lake then venture into the woods to hear the sights and sounds of nature. We may hear an owl hoot or spot a deer with a fawn or see fireflies. The night brings a new adventure to hiking in the woods. The night skies will slowly light up the sky by the end of the night where we will see stars and the moon.

Step back in time and explore the very roots of our local heritage with our ongoing weekly Fort Tours, held every Saturday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, rain or shine. This program offers a rare opportunity to step inside the interior of our late 18th-century blockhouse, one of the oldest historic structures in the region. You will discover the gripping history of early settlement in the frontier territory that eventually became Barrow County, and learn how the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) taking possession of the building in 1927 ultimately planted the seeds for the creation of Fort Yargo State Park decades later. Whether you are a dedicated history buff or just curious about the past, stop by this weekend to walk the same floorboards as Georgia's early settlers! FREE!

New Moon Stargazing Hike

Escape the bright lights and experience the magic of the night sky during our New Moon Stargazing Hike! Meeting at the Visitor Center at 8:30 PM, this guided night hike will take us on a short, three-quarter-mile trek across the long bridge and out to the rocky point at the Fishing Hole. With the moon's light at its absolute minimum, it is the perfect setting to look up and marvel at the stars and constellations above, weather permitting. Cost is $10/hiker (ages 10+) Wonder why Panola Mountain is a restricted area? Come on a guided hike for a close look at our unique ecology and see how outcrop plants scrape out a living in this harsh environment. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring water. This is a moderately strenuous hike covering over 3 miles, with significant elevation changes and uneven terrain. Ages 10 and up. Groups of 10 or more must register for a private hike. Meet at Nature Center. Reservations are nonrefundable. Participants must give at least 24 hour’s notice if they need to reschedule. Transfer credits will only be applied to a similar program. In the case of severe weather or slippery conditions, the park may deem it necessary to cancel or reschedule the hike. Park staff will notify registered participants of any change of plans prior to the event. If there are no sign-ups by the end of the day prior to the hike, the park reserves the right to cancel the program. All vehicles in a GA State Park must purchase and/or display a valid parking pass.

The program fee is $25 (not including any park pass or entry fees) however, you walk home with your own telescopic fishing pole and stocked tackle box! Step back in time and explore the very roots of our local heritage with our ongoing weekly Fort Tours, held every Saturday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, rain or shine. This program offers a rare opportunity to step inside the interior of our late 18th-century blockhouse, one of the oldest historic structures in the region. You will discover the gripping history of early settlement in the frontier territory that eventually became Barrow County, and learn how the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) taking possession of the building in 1927 ultimately planted the seeds for the creation of Fort Yargo State Park decades later. Whether you are a dedicated history buff or just curious about the past, stop by this weekend to walk the same floorboards as Georgia's early settlers! FREE!
