Eyes on the Skies: A Bald Eagle Expedition (Monumental Moments)

This guided walk-and-talk discussion focuses on the American Bald Eagle, the ultimate success story of wildlife conservation. We will explore how this magnificent raptor was brought back from the brink of extinction through historic environmental legislation, recovering so dramatically that Georgia now boasts over 200 confirmed nesting territories statewide—including frequent recent sightings around neighboring Lake Lanier. While it is entirely possible a soaring eagle could grace the skies over Fort Yargo, finding one during our brief lakeside trek is exceedingly unlikely. You will discover the gripping history of early settlement in the frontier territory that eventually became Barrow County, and learn how the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) taking possession of the building in 1927 ultimately planted the seeds for the creation of Fort Yargo State Park decades later. This program offers a rare opportunity to step inside the interior of our late 18th-century blockhouse, one of the oldest historic structures in the region. You will discover the gripping history of early settlement in the frontier territory that eventually became Barrow County, and learn how the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) taking possession of the building in 1927 ultimately planted the seeds for the creation of Fort Yargo State Park decades later. Cost is $10/hiker (ages 10+) Wonder why Panola Mountain is a restricted area? Come on a guided hike for a close look at our unique ecology and see how outcrop plants scrape out a living in this harsh environment. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring water. This is a moderately strenuous hike covering over 3 miles, with significant elevation changes and uneven terrain. Ages 10 and up. Groups of 10 or more must register for a private hike. Meet at Nature Center. Reservations are nonrefundable. Participants must give at least 24 hour’s notice if they need to reschedule. Transfer credits will only be applied to a similar program. In the case of severe weather or slippery conditions, the park may deem it necessary to cancel or reschedule the hike. Park staff will notify registered participants of any change of plans prior to the event. If there are no sign-ups by the end of the day prior to the hike, the park reserves the right to cancel the program. All vehicles in a GA State Park must purchase and/or display a valid parking pass.

This program offers a rare opportunity to step inside the interior of our late 18th-century blockhouse, one of the oldest historic structures in the region. You will discover the gripping history of early settlement in the frontier territory that eventually became Barrow County, and learn how the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) taking possession of the building in 1927 ultimately planted the seeds for the creation of Fort Yargo State Park decades later.
